System Build

XP Installation

• Boot OEM XP Installation and Install Microsoft Windows XP
• Delete all partitions, and create a new one of the maximum size
• Format with NTFS (DO NOT USE QUICK FORMAT)
• Allow Windows to complete installation with all defaults

First Boot

• Login/logon as the Administrator
• Open Desktop Properties, and go to Desktop / Customize Desktop
• Enable all icons, disable Desktop Cleanup Wizard
• Right click Start / Explore.
• View / Sort by Name, Auto-Arrange and Align to Grid.
• Under Tools / Folder Options, uncheck “Hide Extensions”
• Apply to All Folders
• Right click Start / Open and perform the same procedures.
• Right click the Task Bar and go to Toolbar / Quick Launch.
• Right click the Task Bar / Properties, Start Menu, Customize.
• On the Advanced Tab, set all folders to Open as a Menu.
• Although is you do not have XP Service Pack (SP) 1a installed you may find it here:

• Go to Windows Update, upgrade to Microsoft Update and install ALL Critical, Recommended and Hardware Updates.  

Software Installation

• After rebooting, go to My Computer / Manage.
• Under the Services tab:
  • Disable “Wireless Zero Config” service for all desktops.
  • Disable “Remote Registry” service for all XP Pro Systems.
• Install http://www.microsoft.com/antispyware
• Install http://messenger.live.com
  • Uncheck All Boxes except Windows Live Sign-in Assistant, Photo Gallery and  
• Go to adobe.com and install Flash, Shockwave Players, and Adobe Acrobat 8 without toolbars or add-ons
  • Run once, “Do not show this again,” then install updates.  
• Install Spybot Search & Destroy
  • Uncheck ALL checkboxes
  • Run, ignore System Restore box, and install all updates
  • Immunize All, but DO NOT enable “Permanent blocking.”
• Install the following to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Codecs
  • k-Lite Codec Pack – Basic http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
  • Real Alternative Defaults (no player)  – http://www.free-codecs.com/download/real_alternative.htm
  • Quicktime Alternative (no player) – http://www.free-codecs.com/download/quicktime_alternative.htm
  • Divx Codecs and Web Player ONLY – http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/web-player
    • Uncheck all the boxes except for web player and Codecs pack
• Avast! Antivirus Free (or commercial) edition

Please note: do not install:

Norton antivirus, Symantic Antivirus or McAfee Antivirus software… At this point it is taken care of and they hog system resources.
