Monday Aug 29, 2011The following images were photographed with an old (3 year old) Nikon Coolpix Camera. It is possible for quality images to come out of a point and shoot camera. After all, for this application (Landscapes and Wildlife) it is not always necessary to use your D-SLR.

Explaining the Mode and White Balance Functions for Canon Point and Shoot Cameras

- Mode Dial
- Functions
- Playback
- (Looks like the play button on a VCR or DVD player) This allows for review of images and video that you have already created.
- Automatic
- (Looks like a little camera) Sets the camera for general all purpose photography.
- Manual
- (Looks like a little camera with a capital M) Sets the camera for more specific photography. It allows for Manual adjustments in the Apature and Shutter speed.
- Scene
- (Look for the letters SCN) Sets the camera for a specific scene. Allowing for better exposure in the circumstance that the scene is specific for. See your manuals for details.
- Video
- (Look for the movie camera) This mode allows you to make small movies, that may look a little choppy.
- Playback
- Functions
- White Balance
- Auto
- Allows the camera to make automatic adjustment to color correct for the type of light available to the camera.
- Day light
- Adjusts the camera’s color temperature for outdoors under daylight conditions.
- Tungsten
- Adjusts the camera’s color temperature for indoors under incandesent or household lightbulb like conditions.
- Florecent
- Adjusts the camera’s color temperature for florescent bulb lit conditions.
- Custom
- Allows you to photograph a primarily white object and sets the lighting adjustment accordingly.
- Auto
